Fish River Canyon

Fish River Canyon

Fish River Canyon

In 2008 I was fortunate to  hike the Fish River Canyon with friends.  The Fish River Canyon is located in the South of Namibia and is one of the most beautiful hikes that I have done.  It’s beauty lies in the very harshness of the environment.  85km over 5 days is done without too much trouble.  We were fortunate to have a good supply of water the whole time, so didn’t have to take much with us.  There are a few short cuts that can be taken, but make sure that you know them.

Rock hopping and grinding through the sand is the order of the day for the Fish River.  I lost count of how many times we crossed the river.  Boots on, boots off…

If you hike in the middle of the year (winter time) there is very little chance of rain. It is not necessary to take a tent and you sleep out under the stars. We were however caught by the rain, but managed to find shelter.

The Fish River is one of those  hikes for the Bucket List.  Definitely worth doing once and I would love to have the priviledge of hiking it again.
